Assistant Controller, Starlight U.S. Multi-Family


Overview

Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller will play a pivotal role within the Starlight U.S. Multi-Family finance team acting as a key resource to the Controllers and Executive Director, Finance. The role leads a team overseeing the property accounting and reporting as well as consolidation of over 35 Class “A” multi-family buildings comprising an aggregate of over 12,000 units. This role has high exposure to the leadership of the finance group and is meant for someone who is able to effectively manage and promote the development of a strong team, develop and monitor compliance with policies and processes to support the excepted growth of our business and work with our external property management finance teams in ensuring the accurate and timely presentation of our financial results. The individual needs to be a strong leader, have hard work ethic and be able to bridge their strong finance background to provide meaningful insights to help us run our business.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Controllership and month-end close
  • Lead and manage members of our corporate finance team while reviewing their work, providing guidance and training on a daily basis;
  • Ensuring the accurate / timely monthly close process (close completed on ~Day 1 of the month) for all properties, meeting all deadlines and ensuring the integrity of the general ledger consistent with corporate accounting practices;
  • Maintaining organized and efficient reporting / working papers for all financial balances and statistics;
  • Prepare / review journal entries and review / approve invoices related to our properties or corporate expenses;
  • Act as a key resource to our property management finance teams for training or guidance, where required.
  • Operational reporting and budgeting / forecasting
  • Detailed review of the monthly, quarterly and annual operating results v. budget and trend for each property to ensure accuracy as well as provide meaningful insights to improve operations;
  • Assist with the input, development and analysis of budgets and review of property level budgets to ensure consistency in budget v. actual reporting once budgets are finalized;
  • Ad-hoc reporting and analysis, as required
  • Legal entity reporting, audits and compliance reporting
  • Maintaining general ledger consistent with our legal entity structure including oversight of intercompany reconciliations for complicated legal structures;
  • Preparation and review of year-end working papers for the external audit process;
  • Work with external auditors, including the preparation of audit working papers and assisting with the preparation of financial statements as required;
  • Acquisitions, Dispositions and Refinancing of properties
  • Preparing journal entries to account for acquisitions, dispositions and refinancing of properties;
  • Owning the setup of properties on our systems including working with our IT team to ensure smooth transition of properties to avoid operational interruption into our automated platforms (yardi, yieldstar,yardi energy management, rentcafe, etc.);
  • Preparation of technical accounting memo’s, as required
Requirements
  • University degree in Business/Accounting with advanced degree or professional accounting designation (CA, CPA) preferred
  • 7+ years of progressive finance/accounting roles in real estate
  • Strong business acumen and demonstrated business partner
  • Articulate with strong communication (written/verbal), interpersonal & organizational skills
  • Very strong knowledge of IFRS accounting principles, practices and application
  • Strong analytical mindset with ability to think outside of the box
  • Experience managing / leading / motivating a team and in a team environment
  • Experience overseeing audits performed by external audit firms
  • Ability to interpret, develop and implement standardized, scalable policies / procedures
  • Willing to get into the detail and take responsibility for ensuring deadlines are met
  • Advanced / expert MS Excel skills required and experience with Yardi a strong asset
