Overview

Reporting to the Executive Director of Finance, the Director of Finance will be a key member of the Canadian Commercial finance team and with the support of the accounting group is responsible for the following core areas:

Duties and Responsibilities

Controllership

  • Review and optimize monthly reporting processes and timelines, including inbound Property Manager reporting and outbound reporting to internal and external stakeholders (i.e., investors, lenders).
  • Develop strong oversight of Property Manager finance operations, ensuring timely and accurate monthly property reporting and adherence to Starlight policies and procedures.
  • Oversee accounting operations, including the review of financial statements, supporting schedules and journal entries, ensuring their completeness and accuracy.
  • Lead monthly/​quarterly/​annual reporting to investors, through the accurate and timely preparation of reporting packages.
  • Ensure lender reporting requirements and covenant calculations are completed accurately and delivered on time.
  • Oversight of accounting for property acquisitions, dispositions, refinancing and other complex transactions.
  • Work closely with external auditors, including the preparation/​review of audit working papers and financial statements.
  • Coordinate with external tax consultants, provide accurate information so that tax returns may be filed on time.
  • Lead the team for the implementation of new modules within the current accounting software.

Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Review the monthly financials and work with the Asset Management team to provide value-added analysis and commentary related to the results.
  • Collaborate with Asset Management for the review and analysis of quarterly reforecasts and annual budgets to ensure forecasts are attainable and reflective of current targets.
  • Prepare accurate and insightful cash flow forecasts on a monthly/​weekly basis.
  • Apply forecasting processes to finance operations through cash calls and planned credit facility draws

People and Process Management

  • Oversee the finance team, providing continuous coaching, mentorship and career development support.
  • Establish optimal processes and controls, while instilling a continuous improvement mindset among the team.

Requirements

The successful candidate will possess a university degree in Business/​Accounting and a professional accounting designation (CPA, CA) preferred; experience leading a finance team and liaising directly with external audit firms; and superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills with a strong ability to resolve issues and work well in a deadline driven environment. Proficiency with MS Office and advanced Excel skills are a must. While the role has a significant element of review, the environment is dynamic and the individual needs to be willing to be hands on. Commercial real estate experience and public company experience is an asset.
