Accountant, Corporate Finance

Overview

Reporting to the Director, Corporate Finance and indirectly to the Senior Vice President, Tax & Corporate Finance, the Corporate Accountant will be responsible for the accounting and completion of tasks impacting the overall financial operations of the Starlight Asset Management Group of entities. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Preparation of monthly bank reconciliations and recording journal entries to capture bank activity.
  • Preparation of monthly balance sheet reconciliations (prepaid expenses, accrued liabilities, etc.) and recording journal entries as needed. 
  • Preparation of monthly, quarterly chargeback schedules for shared costs.
  • Preparation of invoices for corporate revenue streams (fees, chargebacks, etc.)
  • Preparation of monthly accounts receivable entries based on invoices schedule.
  • Reconciling and recording corporate related expenses such as postage, parking, and cell phones.
  • Preparation of monthly overhead cost allocation based on up-to-date employee list.
  • Reviewing travel expenses and recoverable expenses monthly in detail and recording journal entries as needed.
  • Preparation and filing of HST returns on a monthly basis for various corporate entities.
  • Reviewing employee expenses and supporting attachments, approving employee expense reports.
  • Reviewing corporate credit card expenses and supporting attachments, approving corporate credit card expense reports and recording journal entries.
  • Reconciling intercompany balances and recording intercompany transactions.
  • Initiating payment for corporate expenses and confirming wiring instructions with vendors.
  • Assistance with cash flow management – daily, weekly, and monthly cash requirements reports.
  • Assistance with preparing financial statements and responding to auditor’s queries.
  • Assistance with the preparation of an in-house tax return program and preparation of basic corporate returns.
  • Assistance with preparation of the annual budget as well as preparation of monthly reporting packages to each department with relevant variance analysis.
  • Assistance with various other ad-hoc projects for the Director and/​or Senior Vice President as needed.

Requirements

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to analyze large amounts of data in a timely manner.
  • Ability to prepare financial reports and presentations for senior management.
  • Strong problem solving and communication skills.
  • Works well independently and in a team environment. 
  • Dependable and willing to meet deadlines and work overtime as required.
  • University degree or college diploma in accounting/​finance with 1 – 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Thorough understanding of accounting principles and GAAP.
  • Working towards a CPA designation is an asset.
  • Accounting software experience; Yardi is an asset.
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft Excel and use of formulas; high level of proficiency is required.
  • Use of AI platforms (ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot) is an asset.
