Overview

Reporting to the Vice President of Finance, the Director of Finance will be directly responsible for managing the overall financial operations of the Starlight Asset Management Group of entities and responsible to provide accurate information, including analysis, budgeting, forecasting and preparation of financial reports. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the accounting operations including the detailed review of journal entries, balance sheet account reconciliations and financial statements.
  • Detailed review of intercompany reconciliations completed by the Corporate Finance accounting team.
  • Review revenue and charge-back invoices.
  • Approvals of various bank and credit card transactions, purchase orders, invoices and other corporate expenses.
  • Review reconciliation of corporate credit cards.
  • Detailed review of the monthly, quarterly and annual operating results for the Starlight Asset Management Group of entities. 
  • Work with external auditors, including the preparation of audit working papers, financial statements and notes to the financial statements.
  • Assisting and overseeing preparation of tax returns (Canadian) completed by tax advisors to ensure critical deadlines are met. 
  • Review of GST/HST returns.
  • Generate financial information for quarterly and annual reports and responsible for the accuracy and timeliness of financial information.
  • Preparation and presentation of the monthly cash flow analysis.
  • Responsible for the preparation of quarterly and annual debt covenant reporting to financial institutions, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Lead the corporate budgeting process and work with various stakeholders to prepare and present the corporate budget to senior management.
  • Preparation and presentation to senior management of variance to budget analysis.
  • Lead a team of 2 to 5 staff assigned on your entities. Provide guidance and coaching to the team, as required. Ensure the team meets the assigned deadlines and that entities are reported on time.
  • Continuous improvement of accounting practices and policies.
  • Assist Vice President of Finance with other special projects as needed.

Requirements

  • University degree in Business/​Accounting with advanced degree or professional accounting designation (such as CPA, CGA or CMA) preferred.
  • Proficient communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Experience overseeing audits performed by external audit firms.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles, practices and applications.
  • Management and or supervisory experience. We are an approved CPA training office, so need to be willing to work closely with staff to teach them and train them, as they work toward obtaining the CPA designation.
  • Strong leader who can guide the team to the end goal and help them solve problems along the way. Also ensuring the team meets the reporting deadlines of the assigned entities.
  • Professional written and verbal communications skills.
  • Good problem solving skills and the ability to make the necessary decisions to move forward the work at hand.
  • Ability to adapt to and learn new software.
  • Able to work efficiently as a part of a team as well as independently.
  • Able to work well under pressure.
  • Good organizational, time management and prioritizing skills.
  • Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
  • Willing to get into the detail, and performing all tasks themselves. While the role has a significant element of review, the environment is dynamic, and the individual needs to be willing to get into the detail themselves.
