Junior Financial Analyst, Tax

Overview

Reporting to the Tax Manager, the Junior Financial Analyst, Tax (“JFA”) will will provide support to the Tax Centre of Excellence through the review of prepared tax returns and assisting with all annual tax compliance-related tasks. The Tax Centre of Excellence is dedicated to various investment funds created and managed by Starlight and through this role, the JFA will have exposure to the tax and accounting for various portfolio’s owned by Starlight and/​or large institutional investors. 

The role will act as a key business partner to members of the portfolio finance teams to assist in providing insightful, timely and accurate tax information to assist with optimizing decisions surrounding the operation of the properties which ultimately allows Starlight to maximize returns for our investors. The role will have exposure to all levels of management and most internal stakeholders including asset management, investments, leasing, shared service finance teams including treasury, property accounting (CORE), tax and other business lines as required to successful execute their responsibilities. 

The successful candidate must be a motivated individual who is eager to learn, a strong-team player, strong communicator, be detail oriented and possess the ability to think analytically to understand and evaluate performance of our assets. The individual also needs to be able to work within a dynamic, high-growth environment and assist with process improvement efforts positioned to allow our business to position itself well for potential growth in the future utilizing best-in-class processes and leading-edge technologies where relevant.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review various Canadian tax returns (T5013, T3T2)
  • Investigate discrepancies in tax returns and provide detailed reconciliations to the Tax Manager
  • Work closely with our tax preparers to answer queries and provide back-up
  • Assistance with the year-end compliance filing (tracking status, coordinating signatures, etc.)
  • Tracking and coordination of tax-related mail, including assistance with tracking various tax notices and balances
  • Coordination and tracking of tax payments
  • Assistance with tax account registrations and authorizations
  • Assistance with responding to government tax queries (pulling back-up, compiling response packages, etc.)
  • Assistance with various other ad-hoc projects for the Tax Manager and/​or SVP of Corporate Finance & Tax as they arise

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an Accounting program in pursuit of CPA designation at a Canadian University 
  • Pursuing full-time employment post-graduation 
  • Highly motivated, strong organizational skills and analytical mindset, eager to learn, be impactful and think outside of the box
  • Detail oriented, self-motivated, with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Able to prioritize, multi-task and able to work in a changing, fast-paced environment, sensitive to deadlines
  • Understanding of IFRS accounting principles, practices, and application a strong asset
