Manager, Financial Reporting — Public Entity Reporting Team

Overview

This role reports directly to the Director, Finance – Public Entity Reporting Team (“PERT”). PERT is a team of highly motivated, CPA experts dedicated to assisting with the preparation and oversight of financial reporting relating to all publicly traded entities managed by Starlight, which currently includes four listed companies invested in Canadian residential, Canadian commercial and U.S. residential assets. 

This specific role will oversee financial reporting for True North Commercial REIT (“TNC”) listed on the TSX and one of Canada’s premier commercial real estate companies and also assist with the standardization of financial reporting for all Starlight investment vehicles by working with the other members of PERT and other finance leads throughout Starlight’s various business lines. This role would also assist in various other public filings as required and as business needs arise. The individual would also work closely with the Director, Finance – Canadian Commercial in the preparation of the public filings relating to TNC.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the preparation of high-quality, effective and efficient quarterly investor reporting materials including financial statements, press release, investor presentations and MD&A.
  • Manage the internal approval process of financial statements with Director, Finance – PERT /​Director, Finance – Canadian Commercial, Starlight legal team and Starlight executives providing the opportunity to have a high level of exposure to various senior team members. 
  • Assist with the preparation of other public filings including management information circular, annual information form and other filings as required. 
  • Lead a special project to standardize and automate the production of all financial statements for Starlight’s partnerships through Workiva and data integration to Starlight’s source systems. 
  • Streamline reporting processes to simplify the production of financial statements and eliminate risk of error in Workiva.
  • Prepare accounting Memos as and when required.
  • Assist with financial reporting to new business initiatives, as required. 
  • Develop an understanding of key drivers required to draft financial reporting and coordinate internal review meetings to ensure alignment of key messaging in quarterly and annual reporting amongst all internal stakeholders. 
  • Manage external audits required including the preparation of working papers and relationship management with audit firms to ensure timely audit completion. 
  • Manage process improvement projects to streamline accounting processes, as required. 
  • Coordinate with portfolio finance teams to ensure the acquisition, disposition and refinancing accounting are completed in time for monthly and quarterly reporting and that preparation is efficient and fulsome enough to capture all internal and external reporting requirements. 
  • Provide support on financial aspects of property acquisitions, dispositions, and property financing activities, as required.
  • Assist with other business transactions to provide financial support, as required.
  • The role may eventually include the potential to assist in execution of acquisition and financings from time to time, depending on availability. 
  • Understand the key drivers of liquidity and debt to the extent required to draft financial reporting and communicate key message to investors. 

Requirements

  • University degree in Business or Accounting.
  • CPA designation required. 
  • 3 to 4 years of post-qualification experience.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge. 
  • Experience writing or reviewing financial statements, MD&A and press releases.
  • Public accounting experience, ideally from big four accounting firm or public real estate vehicle responsible for financial reporting. 
  • Real estate experience is a strong asset, but not required.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, detail oriented, self-motivated and resourceful, with strong interpersonal and communication skills (written/​verbal).
  • Strong organizational skills and analytical mindset with ability to balance detail with understanding business needs.
  • Intermediate to advanced experience with Microsoft Suite, in particular Microsoft Excel.
  • Must have experience with Workiva. 
  • Experience with Yardi is an asset.
