Senior Accountant — Tax Specialist

Overview

Reporting directly to the Tax Manager and indirectly to the Vice President of Finance, the Senior Accountant — Tax Specialist will provide support to the Tax Centre of Excellence by leading the annual tax compliance program for Starlight’s group of entities located in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. 

Duties and Responsibilities


  • Responsibility for all Canadian tax compliance for entities owned or managed by Starlight and any related or associated entities. This includes, but is not limited to, T1, T2, T3 and T5013 returns
  • Responsibility for all Canadian tax elections, including rollovers, capital dividends and any other elections needed for entities owned or managed by Starlight and any related or associated entities
  • Collaboration with our Canadian Multi-Family and Corporate Finance departments to review financial statements and respond to tax inquiries from service providers, tax authorities, partners, investors, and stakeholders
  • Plan and schedule all required tax payments and instalments
  • Monitor all tax correspondences and various return balances
  • Manage business number registrations, authorized representative updates, ownership updates, and other information updates with the CRA.
  • Assist with all tax-related matters including disputes and objections
  • Responsibility for all U.S. tax compliance for entities owned or managed by Starlight U.S Multi-Family and any related or associated entities. This includes Corporations, US partnerships and disregarded entity filings
  • Responsible for all US tax elections, forms, and registrations, including, but not limited to 8832 elections, W7, W8, W9 and EIN registrations, etc. for entities owned or managed by Starlight U.S. Multi-Family as well as any related or associated entities
  • Collaborate with the U.S. Finance Department to review financial statements and respond to inquiries from various tax advisory firms and tax authorities.
  • Ensure all partnership and corporate tax instalments are paid (8804, 8813, 8288, 8288A, 8288B, etc.)
  • Track all IRS notices and refunds, as applicable
  • Ensure REIT qualification requirements are met for all U.S. Real Estate Investment Trusts
  • Work with the U.S. Finance Department to ensure necessary tax reporting information can be extracted automatically and efficiently from our source accounting systems
  • Responsibility for all UK tax compliance for entities owned or managed by Starlight and any related or associated entities. This includes Corporations and partnerships located in both the UK and Jersey
  • Track all HMRC and Revenue Jersey notices and refunds, as applicable
  • Respond to tax-related queries from partners, investors, and tax authorities
  • Assist with tax compliance of other jurisdictions as they arise
  • Assist with other tax programs (GST/HST, VAT, etc.) as necessary
  • Assist with various other tax-related projects as they arise
  • Advanced knowledge of Canadian tax compliance
  • Working knowledge in US tax compliance and UK tax compliance
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to analyze large amounts of data
  • Ability to prepare reports and presentations for senior management
  • Ability to identify problems and present solutions

Requirements

  • Accounting software experience; YARDI an asset
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office and Excel
  • University degree in Business/​Accounting plus progress toward a professional accounting designation (such as CPA) preferred
  • Advanced taxation courses such as the In-Depth Tax Course or Master’s in Taxation are assets
  • Thorough understanding of accounting principles (both IFRS and ASPE)
  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in a tax compliance or related role
  • Real estate or asset management experience is an asset
  • Experience with various tax laws and remitting and filing requirements
