Building Automation & Energy Specialist


This position reports to the Executive Director of Procurement and Technical Services. The Energy Specialist is responsible for the for overseeing and managing daily departmental administration and residential development projects including timelines, schedule, notifications, approval processes, contracts, etc. The Energy Specialist will also be directly responsible for the ongoing support of building automation systems within the multi-residential and commercial portfolios. This role will also include proactive participation in various environmental and energy savings initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation of full quarterly reporting and prepare any other reporting reasonably requested by the Energy Project Managers or the Executive Director of Procurement and Technical Services
  • Assist in energy savings and capital projects financials and organize them as required for presentation in the quarterly reports and other reporting as requested for stakeholders.
  • Pro-actively monitor energy costs & consumption
  • Portfolio-wide energy analysis and benchmarking
  • Assist in the creation of annual utility operating and capital budgets in accordance with the asset plans.
  • Analyze expenses including utility consumption tracking and identify cost savings opportunities.
  • Assist with acquisitions, dispositions, financing and other transactions and co-ordination of such due diligence activities as necessary
  • Assist the project managers or Executive team as needed with any other property analytical information.
  • Pro-actively dial into Building Automation Systems on a regular basis to ensure that building operating parameters are correct
  • Adjust operating parameters and review / adjust programming as required
  • Provide support to property management and trades personnel.
  • Provide training where necessary
  • Provide remote access services during working hours and after hours if required
  • Assist in preparing various energy reports and budgets including Portfolio-wide energy analysis and benchmarking
  • Assist in identifying incentives / government grants along with application preparation & submission of applications
  • Assist Energy Project Managers with Green Building certifications such as LEED & BOMA Best on commercial properties and residential as requested, including energy upgrade projects relating to them
  • Assist Energy Project Managers in the preparation or submissions for various industry awards (FRPO/LEED/BOMA)
  • Identify Energy Conservation Measures on Starlight properties whenever possible
  • Assist in organizing Tenant and staff engagement sessions relating to energy and environment. (Earth Day clean-up/Sustainability Team)
  • Work with industry partners to meet goals pertaining to electricity, gas and waste (City of Toronto/Enbridge/Toronto Hydro)
  • Work with Energy software companies on reporting and energy analysis tools (Yardi/Wyse Synergy)
  • Other projects or tasks as assigned
  • Degree / Diploma in HVAC, Energy System, building automation systems or equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years experience in building automation systems
  • Knowledge in the following areas: multi-residential and commercial HVAC systems, building codes, ASHRAE standards, Honeywell, Siemens and Reliable Control Systems
  • Additional certification such as CET or LEED considered an asset
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access), Outlook, MS Project
