Director, Finance, Canadian Multi-Family


Reporting to the Executive Director of Finance, the Director of Finance will be a key member of the Canadian multi-family finance team and with the support of the accounting group is responsible for the following core areas of responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities

Management Reporting

  • Continually review monthly management reporting timetable
  • PM reporting
  • Monthly report to asset management and Executive Director
  • Quarterly reporting to internal and external stakeholders (ie: investors, banks, etc)
  • Review capital expenditureprojects and ensure monthly accruals are up to date
  • Review monthly income statements and balance sheets and work with the asset management team to provide analysis and commentary of the results
  • Oversee the finance team, and ensure that deadlines are met, including external and internal deadlines. 
  • Oversight of accounting for acquisitions, dispositions and refinancings and other complicated transactions

Property Reporting

  • Review monthly property reports and develop strong oversight on PM finance operations
  • Responsible for communication with the property managers and ensuring that their questions are answered on a timely basis

External Reporting

  • Lead year end external reporting processes for reviews and audits
  • Lead the quarterly reporting to the investors, through accurate and timely preparation of the P&L and reports requested by the investors
  • Ensure all quarterly and yearly lender requirements are completed accurately and delivered on time

Cash Forecasting

  • Prepare accurate cash flow projections on a weekly basis
  •  Review property and owner cash calls as required
  • Use forecasting to ensure adequate planning for credit facility draws


  • Ensure LP and GP financials are maintained and liaise with auditors on preparation of annual tax returns
  • Provide auditors with information accurate information to file the returns by the deadlines


  •  Oversight of the team in the management of accounting operations including high level review of journal entries, balance sheet account reconciliations and preparation of financial statements


  • University degree and professional accounting designation (such as CA, CPA) preferred.
  • Experience in supporting business performance and growth through effective reporting and analysis.
  • Proficient communication (both written and verbal), interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Experience overseeing audits performed by external audit firms.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles, practices and applications.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office and Excel.
  • Management and or supervisory experience.  We are an approved CPA training office, so need to be willing to work closely with staff to teach them and train them, as they work toward obtaining the CPA designation.
  • Good problem solving skills and the ability to make the necessary decisions to move forward the work at hand.
  • Ability to adapt to and learn to use new software.
  • Able to work efficiently as a part of a team as well as independently.
  • Able to work well under pressure.
  • Good organizational, time management and prioritizing skills.
  • Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
  • Willing to get into the detail, and performing tasks themselves.  While the role has a significant element of management review, the environment is dynamic, and the individual needs to be willing to get into the detail.
