Senior Accountant, Starlight U.S. Multi-Family


Overview

Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Senior Accountant is responsible for the accounting for various entities and properties in the Starlight U.S. Multi-Family finance group and will act as a key resource to the team. The Senior Accountant role plays a crucial part of a team involved in the property accounting and reporting as well as the consolidation of our properties owned via public entities, which currently includes 26 Class “A” multi-family buildings totaling over 8,000 multi-family apartment units. The candidate must be able to effectively work with and manage external property management finance teams to ensure accurate and timely presentation of financial results. The candidate is required to be detail oriented, self-motivated, organized and possess the ability to think analytically while managing communication within our organization and with our external property management finance teams.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Property level results and partnership with asset management
  • Detailed review of monthly reporting packages provided by property managers for each property, ensuring these are complete, accurate and reflect appropriate commentary on the results of operations;
  • Detailed variance analysis and commentary of property managers monthly results, including income statement, balance sheet and capital expenditures;
  • Understand Starlight policies and procedures relating to monthly financial close for each property and act as a key resource to continuously educate and reinforce policies with our property managers;
  • Act as a resource to our asset managers to highlight operational deficiencies or opportunities for the properties;
  • Work with and strongly communicate with the property managers to understand their records and ensure the completeness and accuracy of their work;
  • Detailed preparation of consolidated account reconciliations for balance sheet and income statement accounts, including assisting with the preparation of monthly and quarterly financial reporting as required for ownership.
  • Corporate accounting
  • Maintaining the general ledger of our corporate structures including posting journal entries, analyzing general ledger activity, maintaining intercompany reconciliations and entries for investment vehicles;
  • Completion of monthly bank reconciliations for corporate bank accounts;
  • Process invoices related to our properties or corporate expenses;
  • Preparation and compilation of year-end working papers, lead sheets and any other requests for the external audit process;
  • Preparation of acquisition, disposition and refinancing journal entries and necessary backup for audit purposes;
  • Other tasks assigned by the Assistant Controller, Controller or Executive Director, as required.
Requirements
  • University degree in accounting or finance.
  • CPA designation.
  • 2-4 years of progressive experience in finance/accounting roles, preferably in real estate sector.
  • Thorough understanding of IFRS accounting principles, practices and application.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required and experience with Yardi software an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills and analytical mindset with ability to think outside of the box.
  • Detail oriented, self-motivated and resourceful, with strong interpersonal and communication skills (written/verbal).
  • Proactive and self-directed with demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to prioritize, multi-task and able to work in a changing, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with drafting financial statements and notes a strong asset.
