Executive Director, Finance, U.S. Multi-Family

The properties are managed via different vehicles including publicly traded entities and private / institutional partnerships.

Reporting to the VP, Finance - U.S. Multi-Family, the successful candidate will be dedicated to leading the financial management of two separate publicly listed vehicles comprising ~$1.0B of multi-family residential buildings in targeted high-growth markets in the Southern United States (~3,000 units). Primary responsibilities include review and analysis of property financials, quarterly investor reporting (including drafting FS, press release and MD&A), delivering strong business results by working with our asset management and investments teams, assistance with tax compliance, oversight of internal controls framework, process improvement initiatives as well as overseeing the ongoing cash and debt management of the portfolio by working closely with the VP, Finance and treasury function. 

The role includes one direct report who will assist in the execution of your responsibilities and indirect oversight over the U.S. Corporate Accounting Team which includes 4-5 designated CPA’s. Starlight is a transactional company and you will be a key member of the finance team and contributor to the success of the business through the execution of your responsibilities and acting as a key team member for significant transactions including involvement in financing, acquisitions or dispositions related to the Starlight U.S. public entities.

The successful candidate must be able to effectively work with external and internal partners to ensure accurate and timely presentation of financial results. Duties and Responsibilities

Public Reporting

  • Responsible for preparation of Financial Statements and high-quality MD&A filings for public entities.
  • Lead Finance representative on prospectus filings for equity offerings including financial statement requirements.
  • Assist VP, Finance in responding to research analyst and investor requests.

Financial Management 

  • Build strong relationships with Starlight Financial Planning & Analysis (“FP&A”) and Asset Management group to provide insightful information to improve business results. 
  • Overall responsibility for the preparation of monthly / quarterly operating reports by vehicle including detailed analysis of property performance relative to Budget and Prior Year.
  • Ensure Asset Management receives high quality, informative property reporting and analysis on a timely basis each month as it relates to the U.S. public entities. 
  • Assisting Starlight U.S. Financial Planning & Analysis team in the completion of annual budgets related to the U.S. public entities. 
  • Work with treasury function to ensure the management of cash availability, including review of cash position reporting and cash forecasts prepared by the Starlight shared service treasury team to ensure accurate and insightful cash reporting and forecasting.
  • Oversight and management of the public entity debt portfolios, including ensuring all loan provisions are appropriately complied with and assistance with analysis for new debt financings. 
  • Act as a key resource in the execution of significant business transactions including general financial management and analysis, as required. 



  • Indirect oversight over the U.S. Corporate Accounting Team responsible for the financial close of property and corporate accounting results. 
  • Assist U.S. Corporate Accounting Team in the review of the monthly reporting packages provided by property managers for each property including ensuring commentary reflects the underlying performance of the assets and is complete and accurate.
  • Oversight of lender relationships including compliance reporting to lenders.
  • Support VP Finance in the completion of all tax compliance reporting for U.S. public entities. 
  • Oversight of accounting for acquisitions, dispositions, re-financings and other complicated transactions.
  • Lead an effective relationship with the external audit firm.
  • Lead role in driving process improvements across the organization.
  • Key responsibility for maintaining and improving Internal Controls.
  • Oversight of preparation of tax returns (Canadian and US) completed by tax advisors to ensure critical deadlines are met. 


  • BCOMM, BA, MBA, CPA or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of related business experience.
  • Experienced Finance leader.
  • Significant experience in drafting public company Financial Statements and MD&A reports is key.
  • Experience in supporting business performance and growth through effective reporting and analysis.
  • Strong interest in partnering with business people to improve profitability.
  • Proficient communication (both written and verbal), interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Experience overseeing audits performed by external audit firms.
  • Some knowledge of both Canadian and US tax systems would be helpful.
  • Experience of reporting requirements for public equity offerings.
  • Debt financing experience / knowledge would be an asset.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in pressure situations with a calm and steady demeanor.
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills.
  • Excellent teamwork and team building skills.
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to make the necessary decisions to move forward the work at hand.
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • Good organizational, time management and prioritizing skills.
  • While the role has a significant element of management review, the environment is dynamic, and the individual must be prepared to get into the detail.
